The 2009 Mystery Florida Conference features a variety of well-known authors ready to meet you and share their stories and successes.

Image WAYNE BARCOMB

Wayne Barcomb has written 5 mystery and thriller novels, including The Hunted, a thriller about a female serial killer in New York and the intellectual young homicide detective tracking her. The Hunted will be published by St. Martin’s Press in April, 2009. His 6th novel, just completed, is a mystery, the third in a series set in Florida. He has also written short stories including Goodnight Mrs. Chisholm which appeared in the best selling anthology Mystery in the Sunshine State, edited by Stuart Kaminsky.

He was active in theatre for many years, playing leading roles in over 50 theatrical productions before becoming a full time author. He continues to write free lance theatre reviews as well as a range of articles for a variety of publications.

In his business career, Mr. Barcomb served as CEO of a major publisher of college textbooks and Chairman of the Higher Education Division of the Association of American Publishers.

 

Image JAMES O. BORN

James O. Born is the author of five police thrillers from Putnam.  ESCAPE CLAUSE, was the winner of the inaugural Florida Book award for best novel in popular fiction.  In 2009, TOR published a science fiction written by Jim titled, THE HUMAN DISGUISE, under the pen name James O’Neal.

Cal  Branche has devoted much time to researching John D. MacDonald, and his web site, JDM Homepage.org is devoted to that author.  He has two Masters Degrees in English, and taught a high school mystery fiction class for 23 years.  He has spoken on the development of mystery-crime-detective fiction, with an emphasis on Florida writers at libraries and conferences as a speaker for the Florida Humanities Council . Currently he is transcribing the World War 2 letters of John D. and Dorothy MacDonald , and continues work on the reorganization of the MacDonald Collection at the Smathers Library  in Gainesville.

Don Bruns is a novelist, musician and songwriter.  He writes about South Florida and the Caribbean and his newest book, Bahama Burnout, has received amazing reviews.  Library Journal says "Another great read by an underappreciated mystery writer."

Image BLAIZE CLEMENT

Blaize Clement has been a psychologist, caterer, dressmaker, ghost-writer and cookie-baking mom, some of them at the same time. She has never been a pet sitter or a deputy sheriff, but she is the author of the cozy-suspense Dixie Hemingway mystery series (St. Martin's Minotaur), in which the protagonist is an ex-Sarasota County Deputy Sheriff turned pet sitter. Set on Siesta Key, the fourth book in the series was released in January, and the fifth, to be published in Jan. 2010, is in production now.

Image TOM CORCORAN

Tom Corcoran is author of the Key West-based Alex Rutledge mysteries.  He has been a bartender, U. S. Navy officer, screenwriter, and magazine editor. His photos appeared on seven Jimmy Buffett album covers. His portraits of Thomas McGuane, Winston Groom, Les Standiford, and James W. Hall have appeared on numerous dust jackets.  Over 160 of Tom's photos were collected in 2008’s award-winning “Key West in Black and White.” He recently has collaborated with performer John Frinzi on lyrics for Frinzi's next CD release, “Shoreline.”  Tom’s sixth novel, “Hawk Channel Chase,” was published in March by Ketch & Yawl Press.

Tim Dorsey was born in Indiana, moved to Florida at the age of 1, and grew up in Riviera Beach in Palm Beach County. He graduated from Auburn University in 1983 with a B.S. in Transportation. While at Auburn, he was editor of the student newspaper, The Plainsman.

From 1983 to 1987, he was a police and courts reporter for The Alabama Journal, the now-defunct evening newspaper in Montgomery. He joined The Tampa Tribune in 1987 as a general assignment reporter. He also worked as a political reporter in the Tribune's Tallahassee bureau and a copy desk editor. From 1994 to 1999, he was the Tribune's night metro editor and night news coordinator. He left the paper in August 1999 and has since had eleven novels published in several languages: Florida Roadkill, Hammerhead Ranch Motel, Orange Crush, Triggerfish Twist, The Stingray Shuffle, Cadillac Beach, Torpedo Juice, The Big Bamboo, Hurriacne Punch and Atomic Lobster. His eleventh book, Nuclear Jellyfish, will be released in January 2009. He lives in Tampa with his family. He is 48.

Image MARY ANNA EVANS

Mary Anna Evans has degrees in physics and engineering, but she envies the protagonist of her mystery series, Faye Longchamp, because she gets to live the exciting life of an archaeologist.  Her novels have won the Benjamin Franklin Award, the Florida Historical Society's Florida Literature Award, and a Florida Book Awards Bronze Medal.  Her first novel, ARTIFACTS, was named by the Voice of Young America (VOYA) as an "Adult Mystery with Young Adult Appeal," and her most recent book, FINDINGS, was named an IndieNext Notable Book.

Image H. TERRELL GRIFFIN

H. Terrell Griffin, a former soldier and board certified trial lawyer, practiced law in Orlando for 38 years.He is the author of Longboat Blues and Murder Key. His third book, Blood Island, was released nationwide on December 1, 2008 and within three weeks went to a second printing. The book was a finalist in the USA Book News National Best Book of The Year Award in the mystery/suspense category, and was listed on the American Booksellers Association (Booksense) best seller list for December. It was also the runner-up for the prestigious Ben Franklin Award presented by the Independent Book Publishers Association, the Indie Award for Best Mystery of 2008 and is a finalist for the Foreward Magazine Best Book of the Year Award. His fourth book, Wyatt’s Revenge, will be released by Oceanview Publishing on November 16, 2009. All four mysteries feature Matt Royal, who has been described by one reviewer as "Travis McGee with a law degree."

Patricia Gussin is the author of Shadow of Death, nominated for Best First Novel in the International Thriller Writers “Thriller” awards and Twisted Justice.  Her third novel, The Test will be available October, 2009.  She has an M.D. degree from Wayne State Medical school and an MBA from Columbia University, has practiced medicine, and has directed research for a major pharmaceutical company.Pat and her husband, Dr. Robert Gussin, are founding partners in Oceanview Publishing. They divide their time between Longboat Key, Florida and East Hampton, New York as well as visiting their seven children and their vineyards in New Zealand

DAVID HAGBERG is a former Air Force cryptographer who has traveled extensively in Europe, the Arctic, and the Caribbean and has spoken at CIA functions. Jonathon King is the creator of the Max Freeman crime series set in the Everglades and the hard streets of urban South Florida. He was a police and court reporter for 24 years in Fort Lauderdale and Philadelphia before turning full-time novelist.    

His most recent work is a controversial novel, The Styx, about the burning of an African-American village on the island of Palm Beach at the turn of the 19th Century.

In 2002 his first book, The Blue Edge of Midnight, won the Edgar Allen Poe Award for best first novel by an American author. He has seven published books set in South Florida.

Ward Larsen’s first book, The Perfect Assassin, won numerous awards, including the Military Writers of America Gold Medal for fiction, and the Silver Medal in the prestigious Florida Book Awards. As a fighter pilot in the United States Air Force, he flew over twenty combat missions in Operation Desert Storm. He has also worked as a federal law enforcement officer, and an aircraft accident investigator. Presently, he is a captain for a major airline and resides with his family in Florida.

James Macomber is a former serviceman, college student, bartender, waiter, salesman, tennis instructor, actor, photographer and attorney and the author of the international legal thrillers, “BARGAINED FOR EXCHANGE” which eerily presaged the existence of terrorist networks in the US, “ART & PART” which had the trial of the Libyans accused of the Pan Am 103 bombing over Lockerbie as the background, “A GRAVE BREACH” which explored the issues and atrocities of the 1990’s Bosnian wars in a novel rich with historical background and stunning detail, and “SOVEREIGN ORDER” which deals with a planned terrorist attack on the Monaco Grand Prix. He lives in Florida with his wife, Sandy, and their 12 year old German Shepherd/Norwegian Elkhound mix, Tank.

P. J. Parrish is author of the critically acclaimed and New York Times bestselling Louis Kincaid and Joe Frye series, set in Florida and Michigan. Bob Morris is author of the Zack Chasteen series of Caribbean mysteries from St. Martin’s Minotaur -- BAHAMARAMA, JAMAICA ME DEAD, BERMUDA SCHWARTZ, A DEADLY SILVER SEA and BAJA FLORIDA (2010). His non-fiction book, HOOKED: My Father’s Tackle Box, Million-Dollar Minnows and the Quest for the Perfect Fishing Lure will be published by Penguin/Gotham Books in 2010. A former newspaper columnist and magazine editor, Morris is frequent contributor to National Geographic Travel, Bon Appetit, Caribbean Travel & Life and other publications. He lives in Winter Park, FL.

James Sheehan has been a trial lawyer in the St. Petersburg/Tampa area of Florida for thirty years. He was born and raised in New York City. He is the author of two critically acclaimed legal thrillers, The Mayor of Lexington Avenue and The Law of Second Chances and has just completed his third book tentatively titled The Alligator Man, which is set in the Florida Everglades.
